‘First win’ fails again…Klinsmann’s absence felt as Korea loses 0-1 to Peru

Klinsmann’s first win as coach fell short again.

Jürgen Klinsmann’s men’s national soccer team lost 0-1 to Peru in an exhibition match at the Busan Asiad main stadium on Saturday. Klinsmann has yet to win a game since taking over, with one draw and two losses in three matches.

Klinsmann replaced Kim Min-jae and Kim Young-kwon with Park Ji-soo and Jung Seung-hyun in the central defense. On the flanks, Lee Ki-je and Ahn Hyun-beom also received chances. In the third line, Won Doo-jae was selected to partner Hwang In-beom. Won is a multi-resource who can play defensive midfield and central defense. In the offense, Son Heung-min was left out and the second line was Hwang Hee-chan, Lee Kang-in, and Lee Jae-sung. Up front is Oh Hyun-gyu, the youngest striker.

Peru harassed the national team with strong forward pressure. In the fifth minute of the first half, Ahn Hyun-beom’s mistake on the right flank was picked up by Paolo Guerrero, who immediately connected with a right-footed curling shot that was saved by goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. The national team struggled to keep the ball and lost possession to Peru.

They eventually conceded in the 10th minute. Brian Reina rattled the net with a powerful left-footed shot after receiving a pass from Guerrero. The Korean National Team continued to look shaky on the right side of the field with Lee Kang-in and Ahn Hyun-beom. They didn’t have a shot on goal in the 18th minute, but they did create threats for Reina and Guerrero.

In the 24th minute, Hwang Hee-chan beat two defenders inside the opponent’s right penalty box before firing a right-footed shot that was blocked by the physical defense. Three minutes later, Oh Hyun-gyu had a solo chance after receiving a kill pass from Lee Kang-in, but his right-footed shot went wide of the goal. In the 33rd minute, Lee Kang-in’s left-footed shot was saved by the Peruvian goalkeeper.

Peru made their first change in the 11th minute of the second half, using all four of their substitutes at once. In the 16th minute, Oh Hyun-gyu had a one-on-one chance with the keeper through Hwang Hee-chan and Lee Kang-in, but failed to capitalize.
